Inspired.

I’ve got tons of new ideas for the next phase of this project– it’s almost like opening a new box of crayons.

I love that feeling of possibility, because you can make so many marvelous pictures with a new box of crayons. That’s how I feel about what’s coming next. But, meanwhile we’ve still got a few more paintings to finish here.

Sustenance.

A lot of you have commented on how I’ve been able to paint so many paintings, and I thought I’d share my secret with you.

It’s my secret energy food.

No M&Ms were harmed in the making of this painting.

Building.

Over the past couple of months, we’ve begun to build a community here, you and I. And it’s awesome.

So even though we’re nearing the end of the 100 days, I’ve come up with a plan. When I sent out the survey a few weeks ago, I asked you guys about what you wanted this to look like. And now that day 100 is approaching, I’ll have a chance to incorporate some of that into a new version of this project that’s coming soon! Don’t think you can get away from me that easily… I’ve got plans to make this even more fun.

Kind of like Tinkertoys– use the same materials, but build an entirely new shape every time. Which brings me to today’s painting.

Popcorn.

I didn’t discover the wonder of popcorn until just a couple of years ago. As a kid, I had braces and random bits of metal in my mouth until I was nearly 18, so I wasn’t allowed to have popcorn, or hard candy, or gum.  Then once I was allowed to have such things, I didn’t really like them.  I realized that all those things I’d wanted as a kid, like Bubblicious and Jolly Ranchers, really just tasted terrible.

But, I’d only had microwave popcorn. And I assumed it was all the same.

So a couple of years ago, planning a party, I found a recipe that made me want to try popcorn again. And I made it on the stovetop– with olive oil. And put it in a red bowl (which makes everything better).

Better late than never. Yum.

Dogwood.

I’m finishing up a commission right now, and it was set up on my easel all yesterday afternoon, so instead of taking it down to paint something else, I thought we’d go back to something a little different. What do you think?

When I was little, my grandmother’s house had a giant dogwood tree in the yard. The branches hung so low that I could sit under the tree without being noticed for a long time. And when it was in bloom, it was like my own secret fairy world.

So when I noticed the dogwood blooms last week, I knew it was time to get out another piece of scratchboard.

Farmers’ Market.

Saturday morning I got up early, grabbed my basket and hopped on the bus. The Hollywood Farmer’s Market was waiting for me. I like to get there early, before all the good stuff is gone.

I bought fresh spinach, arugula, carrots, squash, zucchini, and potatoes that had been in the ground only the day before. Then I stood in line for 15 minutes to get my hands on these strawberries. They’re that good.

It took all my self-control to finish this painting without eating one first. But I did it.

Sunday Series: 13

The other day, I was on the bus. It was late afternoon, I was tired, there were grumpy people all around me. Oh, and it was raining.

People were on their phones, everyone was busy and focused on their own business, as was I. But when I got off the bus, the sun had just come out and there was the most amazing rainbow. It was incredible. I just stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and stared.

But you know what was even more incredible? No one else even noticed. At first, I thought they just didn’t see it, so I said– “Look, a rainbow!” But then I realized they just didn’t care. They were too busy texting or talking to someone else.

But I stopped everything and watched until it faded. I was so grateful for that moment. That I was in just the right place, and had time to stay and enjoy something so lovely. I hope that doesn’t change, no matter how busy I am.

(You might want to click through to see more detail.)

My heart leaps up when I behold A rainbow in the sky:
So it was when my life began;
So it is now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The child is the father of the man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound to each by natural piety.
– William Wordsworth

4×6 Watercolor on Cotton Fiber Paper on bamboo board. $91

Special rules apply to today’s painting. Everyone wins! On Sundays only, instead of one buyer, I’ll paint a version of this for everyone that requests one, because I think if the quote speaks to you then you should have it.

Each painting will be an original and slightly different from the others I send out, but based on the painting you see above. The only rule is that in order to paint one just for you, I must receive your email by 8pm Pacific time today.

NEW!! Your painting will arrive ready to hang, because I’ll mount it on carbonized bamboo using archival adhesive. Here’s an example.

There will be a nice little keyhole like this, so all you have to do it find a nail and hang it right on your wall! No framing required! Yay!

Want it? Email me here.

Day 90

A Productive Week.

I got so much done this week. Several things that I’d been putting off for awhile got done, plus I went to Stitch group, had some good visits with friends, and completed 7 paintings (one is a commission).

Oh! And I solved a Rubik’s cube. Of course, I used YouTube tutorials, so I can’t take full credit, but I solved it!

It’s funny how I thought the little pedestal that came in the package was silly, until I solved the puzzle and wanted to show the whole neighborhood.

Bouncy.

This week has been all about the toys, hasn’t it? I’m ok with that if you are. Here’s one more for you.

A bouncy ball. They’re such fun.
