Twentieth face…

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Lucy is a Jack Russell terrier that lives with Julia. And apparently knows how to accesorize. :)

I’ve never painted a dog wearing a sunhat before. It was kind of fun. :)

Nineteenth face…

Eleri is one of the first people who sent me a face. But I put it off for a little while because I was intimidated by the glasses. Glasses are tricky.

And while I still have much to learn, I think I managed to pull them off. Eleri, what do you think?

Also, I officially want purple hair.

Eighteenth face…

I’m loving this project. It’s really challenging me, in a good way. But it also scares me. What if you send me a face and I paint it and then you don’t like it?

Every morning, when I get up, I check that the newsletter has been sent out (I set it up the night before) and then I worry. Even though I feel like I’m better at faces than when I started, I know I’m still learning (aren’t we all?) and so I worry that you’re on the other side of the screen saying, “What does she think she’s doing?”

This picture is one of those times. This girl is the daughter of a friend and she’s beautiful, and the picture had so much happiness. I really hope I captured some of it.

Seventeenth Face…

This is Flynn. He’s named after Errol Flynn and lives with Tom, who has to be one of the most encouraging guys I’ve ever encountered. Every email I’ve ever gotten from Tom has brightened my day, so I hope this brightens his. Thanks, Tom for all your encouragement and for sharing part of your family with me!

Sixteenth face…

Yesterday I got to work from life. Anni, one of my students who comes for private lessons, was really concentrating hard on her work, and I took that chance to try to catch her face as she worked.

She was using a limited palette (only 4 colors) on her painting, so I thought it was only fair that I do the same thing.

Fifteenth face…

Barbara has been reading these newsletters for more than a year now, and we’d written each other a few times about paintings, but I’d never seen her face. So I was really happy when she sent in a self-portrait.

She’s just a beautiful as I imagined. I love the serenity in the photo and hope that comes through in the painting, too.

Fourteenth face…

I met Sara in New York last fall. She’s spunky and happy and fun to be around. She sent me a photo of her pup, who is obviously pretty happy himself. His name is Gus.

I love his smile, don’t you?

Thirteenth face…

I love how some old photos fade to pink. They’re such fun to paint–even on a day when your hands are already covered in paint. Perhaps because you were standing on a step stool painting your kitchen lime green.

The good news is that the kitchen looks great; the bad news is that it needs at least two more coats. Thankfully this painting only needed one.

Eleventh and Twelfth face…

This painting is one of the first with two faces.

Captain Jack is a pirate kitty who lives with a dancing mermaid. She’s a magical creature, so he’s got to be a pretty special cat.

And the mermaid is pretty special, too. Mccabe teaches girls how to have fun, how to make art, and how to grow up and stay true to their selves. She teaches workshops– you should check it out.
